Facebook recently released their new Open Graph protocol at their “f8” conference. There is still a lot to learn before final determinations can be made, but the key is that Facebook is implementing “Like” buttons that can be enabled through meta data tags in an html page.
Facebook is going to be collecting massive amounts of information about who likes what, when, on what web site, and how that action ripples through Facebook’s social graph. This will allow them to identify influencers, map users to the types of products or media they like, and provide that information back to advertisers, developers, and Facebook users.
Advertisers will use it to push extremely targeted ads to Facebook users. Imagine “Liking” a song on Pandora and then immediately being served with an advertisement to purchase that song or album at a 10% discount. This type of interaction is very near to a reality, but not just for music – for nearly anything.
Even though Open Graph is meant to weaken Google’s role in the long term as the most important referral engine for traffic to a web site, Google will be extremely important in the near future. Furthermore, even if Google’s importance does diminish, it will likely always serve enough traffic to warrant serious attention from web marketers. In the near term, Google is still serving massive amounts of traffic, especially non-news and non-entertainment searches, which includes most consumer searches for products or product information.
