In our previous newsletter, I posted the following quote from Google engineer Matt Cutts' Blog:
"Bigdaddy data center will let us tackle canonicalization, dupes, and redirects in a much better way going forward compared to the current Google infrastructure. I’m not claiming that everything is perfect in Bigdaddy, just that it’s easier for us to make changes and improve search quality as we get feedback from you".
Mr. Cutts was correct; everything is not perfect in Bigdaddy... In fact, Google had a major glitch with Bigdaddy over the past few weeks, knocking approximately 20% of all websites almost completely out of their index. If you noticed a drop in Google traffic, your site was probably affected.
Fortunately, over this past weekend, most sites that suffered from this Bigdaddy update 'glitch' are coming back into the Google index. It seems that Google has its
SERPs back to normal (SNAFU).
However.... a bigger question remains… With all its resources, why is Google having so much trouble figuring out that
www.domain.com and domain.com are the same webpage?
